A few years ago I lived in Portugal. During this time I made several photography trips to London, no doubt photographing the capital more than I do now even though I am based close to London. One client was interested in panoramic images of London and so I chose recognisable London views. Possibly one of the most photographed views in London is the image of St Paul’s Cathedral through the Millennium Bridge. On a cold December evening, close to midnight, I set aside sufficient time to capture the shot I planned which would allow plenty of time to catch the last train from Waterloo station. However, as so often is the case, the weather conditions changed, but for the better surprisingly. I had to make a decision; catch the last train or keep photographing and find an alternative way home. A fog formed over the River Thames and moisture condensed on the glass panes of the Millennium Bridge. Without sounding too dramatic, the effect was magical and the fog quickly encompassed the City. There was a five-minute window where St Paul’s was just visible through the fog, and I captured the image here. It has become the image of which I am most proud. I missed the last train despite my best intentions to run a four-minute mile.
